Annam AI: Syngenta Signs MoU to Become Strategic Partner in India’s First Open-Data Agricultural Ecosystem

Annam AI

Basel, Switzerland: Syngenta has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to become a strategic partner in Annam AI, India’s first open-data agricultural ecosystem designed to provide farmers with free, real-time and personalized agricultural intelligence at scale.

The collaboration will see the global agricultural innovation company contribute its research and agronomic expertise to develop accurate crop health, pest forecasting and heat stress models, supporting the vision of Annam AI to transform Indian agriculture.

The agreement was announced during an event in Nice, France, attended by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and France’s President Emmanuel Macron.

As part of the initiative, Syngenta will leverage its research and development capabilities and agronomic knowledge to strengthen predictive models within Annam AI, helping deliver AI-powered insights to farmers across the country.

India’s agriculture sector is recognized globally for its vast scale, extensive arable land, diverse agro-climatic zones and rich biodiversity, making it one of the world’s leading producers of crops such as rice and wheat.

Despite these strengths, farmers continue to face challenges including erratic monsoons, severe droughts, unseasonal rainfall associated with El Nino, and pests and diseases that destroy an estimated 30 percent of crops annually.

These issues underline the importance of initiatives such as Annam AI, which seek to make advanced agricultural intelligence accessible to farmers.

The country is estimated to have around 150 million farming households, with more than 80 percent comprising smallholder farmers cultivating less than two hectares of land.

This limits economies of scale, creates barriers to adopting advanced technologies and risks widening the gap between large commercial farming operations and smaller agricultural communities.

Through Annam AI, stakeholders aim to bridge this divide by enabling precision agriculture and improving climate resilience.

The nationwide program is designed to establish an agricultural intelligence backbone based on open data that integrates crop intelligence, real-time microclimate information and multilingual engagement tools.

By offering hyperlocal, AI-powered advisories, Annam AI aims to equip farmers with timely and personalized information to improve decision-making and farm productivity.

The initiative derives its name from “Alliance for Next-gen Nourishment through Agriculture Modernization” and also reflects the Sanskrit word “Annam,” meaning food.

It is backed by the Government of India through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, supported by global technology partners including Google, and driven by IIT Ropar, a premier engineering and technology institution within the Indian Institutes of Technology system.

The collaborative approach behind Annam AI seeks to combine government support, academic research and industry expertise to accelerate digital transformation in agriculture.

Syngenta, which has maintained a long-standing presence in India, will contribute its agronomic capabilities to help build accurate crop health assessments, pest forecasting systems and heat stress models under Annam AI.

The company’s participation is intended to strengthen the platform’s ability to generate actionable intelligence for farmers while supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

Jeff Rowe, Syngenta Group’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “At Syngenta we’re creating breakthroughs for farmers in every field, to deliver higher yields with lower impact. Annam.AI presents a unique opportunity to contribute to a transformative, digital foundation for Indian agriculture that will benefit more than 600 million people in this country.

We are deeply honored to work with many talented and committed people in India’s government and universities, as well as with other innovation leaders in fulfilling this vision.”

The signing ceremony also featured Syngenta Country Head for France Anne Azam alongside India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and Annam Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India Dr. Ajay Sood, highlighting the broad collaboration behind Annam AI as it seeks to build an open-data ecosystem for the future of Indian agriculture.
